How To Remove Moss From a Flat Roof

Removing moss from a flat roof is a straightforward task that most homeowners can handle themselves, provided the roof is accessible and safety is prioritised throughout:

  1. If you're using a ladder to reach the roof, ensure it’s stable and placed on level ground.
  2. Always take extra caution when walking on the roof, especially if it’s aged.
  3. Try to stick to the edges and consider using a sturdy standing board if you need to move across the central area.

To begin the moss removal, gently brush the surface to loosen and lift the larger clumps of moss. These can then be gathered and disposed of properly. In many cases, this may be sufficient to clear moss from the flat roof. However, if your roof has persistent patches or is covered with stone chippings, carefully sweep the chippings into a single area. You can then manually remove the moss or transfer the chippings into buckets for rinsing, which will help wash away the moss.

Moving the stone chippings also gives you the chance to inspect the roof for any signs of damage. If everything appears in good condition, simply return the cleaned chippings and redistribute them evenly across the surface.

It’s always better to remove moss from a flat roof than to let it accumulate, but unless you treat the roof with a moss-killing solution, it will grow back and require repeat cleaning. After brushing or removing chippings, apply Baticlean CR to the dry surface. This biocide treatment kills remaining moss spores and inhibits regrowth. If the roof has chippings, apply the solution again after they are replaced to ensure full coverage - both above and below the stones.

Treating your flat roof with Baticlean CR helps maintain a moss-free surface for longer periods. While no method is completely permanent, reapplying the solution every 6 to 12 months can keep future moss growth minimal and your flat roof clean and protected.
